Sleeping puppies at Seven days old

Feeding
time is an hourly job and with eight teats there is room for
everyone at the milk bar.
For
those of you who don't know. When Bernese puppies are first born
the black bits are pink, i.e. nose, pads on feet and as the days
and weeks go by the black pigmentation appears so by the time they
are eight weeks old then a lot of the pink has turned black. Also
Bernese puppies don't have their ears and eyes open to start with,
these open over the first weeks.
If
you are wondering about the various different materials the pups
are on? our whelping box is made of UPVC which is very clean and
hygienic. The bars are made of the same and are there to protect
the puppies from Amy should she roll over there is space for them
to move to the side to avoid getting squashed. The whelping box is
then lined with non slip vinyl to make it more waterproof and easier
to keep clean (it is one permanent clean up job with pups). On top
of that the pups have two fleece whelping mats which are machine
washable
and
have
a stiff
plastic
liner to
keep
them flat, (these are changed several times a day). Above the whelping
box is a heat lamp which is directed onto one of the whelping mats.
The
pups
have
the
choice
to lye on
the whelping mats under the heat lamp or not and or on the vinyl,
therefore staying at the perfect temperature.
